New Face for Leprosy

Exhibition at the outpatient clinic of the Tropical Institute
Tom Bradley

The photo exhibition "New Face for Leprosy" will be on display in the outpatient clinic of the Munich Tropical Institute starting December 16, 2024. The project was initiated by the internationally recognized leprosy expert Professor Diana Lockwood from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the British photographer Tom Bradley and aims to convey a more positive image of people with leprosy. The exhibition has already been shown in the House of Lords of the British Parliament and can now be seen for the first time in Germany at the Tropical Institute.

"Leprosy has been a stigmatizing disease for centuries. Pictures of people affected by leprosy often show the most serious aspects of the disease without telling their stories. With the "New Face for Leprosy" project, we want to improve this by showing people who lead a normal life, work and have a family despite leprosy.

Affected people have told us their stories in order to rethink the negative perceptions about leprosy. We have started to work with people in Ethiopia and India. Their voices are of the utmost importance. They share the challenges they have overcome and pass on messages of hope to others affected."
